KI does not take funding that comes with editorial conditions. We do not adjust our analysis to match donor preferences or government positions. That independence is the most important thing we have — and it is only possible because our supporters fund it without strings attached.
Funding Afghan-Led Analysis
The international policy landscape on Afghanistan is crowded with analysis produced by foreign governments, outside researchers, and international organizations — almost none of it Afghan-led. KI's supporters make it possible to produce the analysis that everyone else isn't: rigorous, independent, and accountable to Afghan civil society first.
Sustaining Independence
An independent Afghan-led policy institution cannot sustain itself on a single funder or a single revenue stream. KI's supporters — diverse in geography, sector, and motivation — are the structural foundation of KI's editorial independence. No single supporter speaks for KI. All supporters make KI possible.
Enabling Long-Term Work
The Afghanistan Recovery Atlas, the Khana Project, the Hindukush Climate Security Initiative — these are multi-year programs. They cannot be built on short-term project funding. KI's supporters who commit to multi-year support are the ones who make it possible to do the work that actually matters, rather than the work that fits a twelve-month grant cycle.
Amplifying Afghan Voices
Every brief KI publishes, every roundtable KI convenes, every COP side event KI leads — these are Afghan voices reaching international audiences that Afghan civil society has historically been excluded from. KI's supporters fund that access and that amplification. They make it possible for Afghans to be heard in the rooms where Afghanistan's future is being decided.
Building Institutional Infrastructure
Afghanistan will need a functioning civil society infrastructure when the political conditions for recovery eventually emerge. KI's supporters are investing in that infrastructure now — the research capacity, the policy networks, the institutional knowledge, and the credibility that will matter when it is needed most.
Standing With Afghanistan
The international community has largely moved on from Afghanistan. KI's supporters have not.
